盡管出生在邁阿密，但西德尼·波蒂埃卻是巴哈馬群島凱特島的本土人，父親是一名農(nóng)民。自幼家境貧賽的西德尼幾乎沒(méi)受過(guò)正規(guī)教育，15歲的時(shí)候他被送往邁阿密，以杜絕他初露苗頭的不良行為。
18歲他來(lái)到紐約，在社會(huì)最底層從事粗重勞動(dòng)。幾經(jīng)努力他終于被美國(guó)Negro Theatre錄取，參演了百老匯劇《Lysistrata》獲得極佳評(píng)論。1949年他經(jīng)過(guò)斟酌，放棄舞臺(tái)劇主演的位置接拍了影片《無(wú)路可走》（No Way Out），他在片中的表現(xiàn)為他贏得了更多角色，每一部影片都讓他杰出黑人演員的地位更進(jìn)一步，但他飾演的角色無(wú)論在趣味還是顯著程度上仍然不及白人演員。
此后的七年間，他拒絕了多個(gè)丑化黑人的角色，并逐漸在黑人演員少有建樹(shù)的主演領(lǐng)域確立了自己地位。1958年影片《逃獄驚魂》（The Defiant Ones）為他贏得了首個(gè)奧斯卡最佳男演員提名，5年后他憑借《野百合》（Lilies of the Field）摘得影帝桂冠，成為首位獲此殊榮的黑人演員。
除了銀幕和舞臺(tái)，波蒂埃還是一位積極的民權(quán)運(yùn)動(dòng)人士，他在《猜猜誰(shuí)來(lái)吃晚餐》（Guess Who\'s Coming to Dinner）、《吾愛(ài)吾師》（To Sir, with Love）中的角色是他沖破黑人與白人之間社會(huì)障礙的界標(biāo)。他的才華、良知、正直、內(nèi)在的可愛(ài)讓他獲得與白人明星相齊的地位。70年代他在導(dǎo)演和制片人領(lǐng)域都取得相當(dāng)?shù)某晒?，盡管近年來(lái)他在銀幕亮相的機(jī)會(huì)越來(lái)越少，他仍然保持了20美國(guó)影壇世紀(jì)最受歡迎和熱愛(ài)的演員地位。
